Wi-Fi vs Wired: When to connect with cable

Ever since wireless internet was introduced back in 1999 with the creation of Wi-Fi, old and new web users alike have been faced with a choice: wired or wireless connections?

The truth of the matter is that both connection methods have their place in the modern world since each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses. Here's an overview of both Wi-Fi and wired ethernet, as well as the situations that each one is best for.

Wi-Fi is best for portable devices and mobile usage

You should opt to use Wi-Fi when using portable devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones. This is because these devices are designed to be taken with you as you move throughout your day — and this is exactly the type of situation that the wireless nature of Wi-Fi is perfect for.

While it's true that Wi-Fi has lower and more inconsistent speeds than that of a wired ethernet connection, the impact of these downsides has been reduced significantly as Wi-Fi has improved. The latest Wi-Fi standard, Wi-Fi 6, provides users with Wi-Fi networks that are faster and more stable than any type before it.

The upcoming eero Pro 6 wireless router comes with Wi-Fi 6, and also has a large range of up to 2,000 square feet. This allows the router to provide Wi-Fi access all throughout most modern homes.

If you need to extend the range even further, eero is also making a special extender that can boost the range of the eero Pro 6 by an additional 1,500 square feet.

Wired connections are ideal for gaming, streaming, and workstations

While many people believe that Wi-Fi has made ethernet obsolete, the truth is that it serves an important role: delivering the fastest and most reliable internet connection for desktops and game consoles.

People who use PCs and consoles to play games, stream movies, get intensive work done, and more will want to have the best possible speed and the best possible stability because hiccups in internet connection can cause broadcasting issues, severe buffering while watching movies, and lag in games that can lose you the round (or even the match).

Additionally, while being limited to the reach of a wire is a problem when using laptops or other portable devices, people using desktops and game consoles won't mind because these devices are stationary anyway. Thus, this downside isn't much of a downside at all in scenarios like these.

You can enjoy the benefits of both with eero Pro 6

While many may think that you should choose between Wi-Fi or ethernet, the truth is that the vast majority of people will probably want to make use of both in their daily routines.

After all, more devices are in the average household than ever before, and most people make use of stationary desktops and game consoles as well as portable devices like laptops, tablets, and/or smartphones.

With the eero Pro 6, you can enjoy both Wi-Fi (specifically, Wi-Fi 6) and wired ethernet. This is because the router comes with two ethernet ports that allow you to hook up two devices with a wired connection while it also provides superb wireless internet to other devices all throughout your home.
